A color remake of the original supervised by George A. Romero's own special effects blood and splatter king, Tom Savini. He knows you have seen the original so he respects the original but changes some of the shocks. Better acting than in the original and technically superior in many ways but Tom Savini ruined the classic ending.
I wouldn't say it's better than the original since I appreciated the political, metaphorical tone and experimental vein of the first one; I'd rather say they both are on the same level of "quality". However, the fact that Barbara is more proactive here makes the character more enjoyable and the ending is very effective in showing human's sometimes vile nature in times of despair.
The '68 George Romero original is simply one of the greatest horror films of all time. This '90 remake by Tom Savini, despite a script by Romero himself, lacks teeth comparatively both as a horror film and as an allegory for something more. While enjoyable to watch it so pales as an experience compared to the original.
1968's themes were reflective of its era, yet the 1990 remake is actually pretty muted in metaphors, with not much to keep your interest. This remake is just as talky as the original, and outside of its opening scenes, there's not much action until the climax. Repetitive scenes of reinforcing the house grow tedious, as does the character interaction. Should've played up the action or built a stronger meaning.
An unnecessary remake whose story at times surpasses the original's but overall misses the mark. Patricia Tallman was the highlight as Barbara but despite the numerous references to Romero's original (even though he wrote the screenplay to the remake) it doesn't have any of the original's charm. In the plus column, Tom Savini, the only person who should've directed this, did a decent job.
