Ratings & Reviews

  1. FISCHER's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

  2. Balthaz21's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

  3. bulgrin's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

It has it's moments, so partly 4 stars. Still worthwhile. Tyrone Power in a must-see role.

  4. the_mentaculus's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

At first, a Carny love-and-murder tale; then, an attack on modern religion; then, a descent into personal hell. That those three plot elements intersect to create a cohesive whole is saying something. The Hollywood cop-out ending almost (thankfully, only almost) ruins it.

  5. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

  6. Braden Vallenères's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

A decent noir effort with an unusual carnival setting. A little long for what it is, with about three endings, but some great visuals in this one.

  7. El Biffo's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

Some nice images/scenes (like the one in this screenshot) but this noir leans heavily on melodrama. And I'm taking off a star for the crass misinterpretation of tarot cards. They could have easily consulted someone who actually understands what the cards really mean.

  8. Sudipto Basu's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

    The undead past comes-a visitin'.

  9. Log Lady's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

A moody and dark first half, lots of swindling and ambiguity, but I was somehow expecting even more sleaze and a less straightforward plot. Tyrone Power's magnetic performance carries the whole film, and it's a shame he didn't get more roles like this.

  10. CEDiSM215's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

  11. Howard Fritzson's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

Colleen Gray gave some memorable performances (Red River, Kiss Of Death) but she is remarkably touching here.

  12. Brandon Nowalk's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

Awfully stately for such sleaze, but you gotta love how busy the frame is when something's afoot. Sleight-of-hand photography.

  13. sfcugura's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

What intrigued me the most was that in spite of the somewhat patriarchal times in which the movie was filmed, it seems like Power's character was controlled by the Three Moires, it's like he was just a puppet driven by his own megalomania and a female (non sexual) force.

  14. SALESK's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

Juicy cult noir chock full of twisted perversion that should be far better known.

  15. MetropolitanGlide's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

a fantastic and especially dark noir. Top notch.

  16. mjgildea's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

Possibly the most underrated film noir ever. If Freaks had a con man son, Nightmare Alley would be it. Tyrone Power gets ahead through Jedi mind tricks and pure son of a bitchery from the carnivals to the big time. For as predictable as the story becomes I still love it but the griminess of the first half and how well it was photographed make up for it. Plus the idea of carnie film noir is intriguing in itself.

  17. Dave's rating of the film Nightmare Alley

Dark, psychological film that has Tyrone Power playing one of the most unrepentant SOBs in all of noir. Must-see.

  18. Daniel S.'s rating of the film Nightmare Alley

Highly recommended. Three women, Tyrone Power, psychoanalysis, guiltiness, carnival. Shake a little and you'll get a smart film noir that is not as politically correct as it could have been.
