Works in fits and starts - when it relishes in the husband's sadism or Steele's ghostly femme fatale, it succeeds. The rest just goes through the motions. I literally thought I was missing two reels, the narrative was so disjointed in places.
If the Countess Bathory of myth had written "Blithe Spirit." Would be 4 stars but Morricone's piano score kind of wrecks the atmosphere.
Besides the sometimes stilted line readings, this is an excellent gothic thiller
