I like Pintilie quite a bit, but far prefer him in his anarchistic black comedy mode. Here we've a sour rendition of the old-folk-baffled-by-the-post-Soviet-situation theme, sprinkled with some lively moments and sharp observations that keep it from being insufferable. And isn't the monotonous movie that ends with a scene of gruesome violence rather old hat by now?
Caught the MoMA Film Society screening of this, followed by a 15 minute video interview with Pintilie. Pretty amazing insights into the film delivered by him following a stunning ending, which he put in the context of Kundera's theory of the novel. Can't wait to find more Pintilie.
