Of all the writers whose works fed film noir, Woolrich was the master of fear—of dread, anxiety, confusion, terror. The pulse of his writing races, the breathing is choked. Few Woolrich adaptations have captured this quality as purely as Never Open That Door, directed by Carlos Hugo Christensen but most memorable for its extraordinary lighting by cinematographer Pablo Taberno.
