Few movies has ever done war with such a sense for gallows humor as this one. It must be one of the darkest comedies ever seen as two opposing soldiers try to get over their differences by defusing a mine that a third one has fallen unto. It is bleak from the get-go and United Nations gets a big middle finger too at the end as they try to cover up their own mistakes.
This film is interested in the big picture of the war. The way we fight wars today, and the role of the UN in these type of conflicts. Everyone is awful. The UN has become a bureaucracy that is more interested in how they look on TV, rather than actually helping. It's a powerful movie that doesn't take its subject lightly. Branko Djuric is quite good in this film.
on one hand it's sort of a bummer that, well, it figures that the #1 most widely acclaimed and internationally known Bosnian film has to be one about the war, because that's the whole of what Bosnia is allowed to be about. but on the other I'm glad because I'm sure the acclaim and the Oscar were good for Tanović's career and, like, if it has to be a war movie, at least it's this kind of war movie
