As with Jeong-Beom's "The Man from Nowhere," there's a melancholy central performance, great photography and terrific action sequences. This time around however, the director makes the mistake of focusing exclusively on another needlessly complicated plot propelled by irritating gangster clichés. Won Bin and Sae-ron Kim's chemistry gave "Nowhere" its heart and urgency; that's what's missing here. Could've been more.
Call it the disappointing B-Side to "The Man From Nowhere." Writer/director Lee Jung-Beom follows up his breakout hit by stealing from himself (again we follow a stylishly-dressed killer haunted by a little girl), not to mention several action beats from Tsui Hark's "Time and Tide" and John McTiernan's "Die Hard." The result is bloody and entertaining enough, but entirely forgettable in comparison to its predecessor.
Lee Jung-Beom follows up the magnificent 'The Man from Nowhere' with another tale of a hit man hitting rock bottom and having to battle to keep both his former quarry and himself alive from his former employers. Like the previous entry its a very well made and exciting film but this one suffers in comparison more for its similarities than its differences. Performances are strong with many stellar action set pieces.
Similar to 'Nowhere', only with the emotions turned up to 11. It avoids some of the mistakes of its predecessor, but ends up making new ones. It felt derivative at times, but the action sequences were quite good.
The relationship between Dong-Gun and Min-Hee is exceptional, pulling you into its complication immediately. However, unlike The Man From Nowhere, it has a problem of balancing its action and relationship drama elements. The action scenes are well choreographed but stretch too long, much like the first acts dramatic buildup, as both could've been better distributed. And most of the side characters are interchangable.
An action redemption story hidden somewhere inside a plot with 100 different interchangeable meaningless characters in business suits, the russian mob, the triads, evil companies, financial accounts, passwords, SIM cards, shady motivations, double backstabbings zzzzZZzzzZZzzzzZZzzzzzZzzzZzzZZzzzZzzZzzzzZzzZzz. Good but derivative action movie that tries and somewhat succeeds in dealing with emotional qualities as much as action set pieces. The story is decent but the acting is a bit uneven. Production values are stellar but the score is pretty bland. Still this is way better than recent Hollywood fare like the horrible John Wick and The Equalizer.
