I expected whitewashing and to see India through the occidental gaze but discovered a subtle, very smart thriller with some of the finest Indian actors in unforgettable parts. The atmosphere of the film is similar to the weather that makes the main character almost faint in a Mumbai hospital: found a lot of the suffocating vibes of Apocalypse Now present. This is how postcolonial European cinema looks out.
Crushingly elusive, admittedly amorphous. A meditative travelogue. Gorgeous, knowing photography of India and its characters. Jean-Hugues Anglade is sexily composed as a long-lost traveler of the heart. Incidentally, he looks really good walking out of water. Felt like it was getting somewhere canonically queer....could it be only one man exists?
