Screenwriter Odets directed this film himself and it stands as a strong dramatic vehicle for Cary Grant and despite it's bleakness it's an interesting look at desperation, second chances and acceptance. Barrymore gives an Oscar winning supporting turn here and the beautiful June Duprez shines here as well.
3.5 stars. This film should be better known. It's gloomy, yes, but the atmosphere is so rich and the characters are so vivid. Odets had talent to burn. I have loved June Duprez since "The Thief of Bagdad." She has an unusual erotic quality, like Zita Johann, another forgotten beauty. And there is Ethel Barrymore's magnificence.
