Loved how this used an ‘epistolary’ structure -amateur footage, documentary, ethnography, investigative journalism, news broadcasts, talk shows, etc.- and how it took ESP/psychic phenomena as a given in its world. But...it’s overlong and the use of music undermines a lot of it.
The slow burn really works to the movie's advantage, allowing individual bits of atmosphere (like the scene in the park) to really soak in, as the overall picture of what's happening gradually becomes clear. That being said, I could have done without the movie slowing down to expound on smaller details (like a ghost someone might not have noticed, etc.); but it's a nitpick. Very solid, overall.

Ms une fois n'est pas coutume, le film est peut-être trop dans la suggestion, au détriment de l'horreur pure. Et la nature de la malédiction demeure in fine assez confuse...
Come qualunque horror di matrice asiatica, questo film richiede elasticità mentale ed una buona dose di pazienza. Se vi aspettate film alla "Rec" o "Paranormal Activity" questo è un film da scartare, poiché per mezz'ora buona, non succede nulla. Ripeto, elasticità e pazienza. Armati di queste due doti potrete godervi quello che è uno dei più complessi film horror che sia mai stato girato, apprezzabile da chiunque.
definitely shiraishi's best, and a very thorough take on the found-footage-horror genre. the plot slowly builds, impressively (as mentioned in another review) fitting together multiple plot points into something that ends up surprising you by forming a cohesive whole at the end. great delivery, with a mix of interviews, variety shows, and good old exploration. not very scary, but definitely interesting.
Japan's answer to the "The Blair Witch Project" is easily one of the best found footage movies of the last 15 years. That might sound like a case of damning with faint praise, but "Noroi" is truly exceptional in its ability to balance multiple, seemingly unrelated narrative threads, only for each of them to organically dovetail into a disturbing climax. A memorable cast of characters is an added boon.
How had such an effective horror film miss inclusion in the Extreme Asian Horror movement? Both thankfully so, if it would had faced into the same treatment as countless other great films in being lobotomized(remade) for western audiences. Here is a smart, remarkably scary, boiler pot horror film that doesn't reinvent the genre but nonetheless uses the genres best elements to terrify. Essential.
