A solid sci-fi plot that would've been genuinely impressive in short story form. Despite its interesting ideas and unique and beautifully rendered post-apocalyptic environments, Oblivion's story unfolds far too slowly. That, along with its bland, lifeless characters make for one expensively made but extremely unengaging viewing experience.
Welcome to the cultural economy of mass-media capital accumulation. Hollywood further dissipates the resources of our collective imaginary and re-recycles its own increasingly redundant conceptual waste products. Narrative by corporate committee is improved into narrative by economic algorithm: Wall-E + I Am Legend + Moon + The Matrix = Profit generated out of distracted emptiness and lethargy in the viewer's psyche.
