3.5 stars. The cast seems to be under some kind of spell right from the start with the young doctor's monologue setting the slightly sinister tone. That takes getting used to. I read the book before seeing the film so I know that it is faithful to the situation if not in every detail. The silly ending is not in the book. Darkly comic and, depending upon your point of view, a little shocking.
Machiko Kyo is wonderful.
