Ratings & Reviews

  1. David Grillo's rating of the film Okayo's Preparedness

When your life is your art and love is a dream. As good as anything by Mizo, Naruse or Ozu from the period.

  2. Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film Okayo's Preparedness

Tanaka Kinuyo is remarkably credible as a shy 19 year-old dance student who falls for Uehara Ken's handsome visitor to her dance school. It may only have been intended as an regime-friendly illustration of that most beloved of Japanese virtues, endurance - its heroine's suffering, finally, is what perfects her art - but in its final twenty minutes it mounts one of the great poetic scenes of '30s Japanese film.
