There's something about repressed women being haunted by mystical creatures, that gives horror films a timeless and cult-like appeal (The Witch, The Innocents, Carnival of Souls, among others). But this one has something else. It sort of demystifies evil, and the intensity of the music and the imagery seem to be celebrating life, as sinful as it may be.
THIS WAS MADE IN 64! Cinematography and lightning masterpiece, with a dense, mystic and horrific story. The finish, well, is just amazing, because you never know how the fate of this 2 women will end...
Have you ever seen anything as beautiful as that tall grass blowing in the wind? No, you haven't.
Personaggi caratterizzati benissimo
Haunting. What is accomplished with lighting and an intense score is unbelievable.
YOOOOOO!!!! This was insane. Black and White / Cinemascope - how did they frame such beautiful closeups in scope? The music blew me away - loud taiko drums!!! Watched a beautiful 35mm print which made it ten fold better.
I feel like there's some commentary here about how westernization was rapidly disconnecting the youth from their elders during the 1960s in Japan. mostly though it's just primordial and evil as hell
This is far from being a horror film in the modern sense, more of a psychological thriller, with the true 'horror' being in the behaviour of the characters.
This is a fantastic melodrama about old people becoming dependent on their younger relatives, and then the guy with the mask walks in, and everything changes.
8 - Picturesque horror parable of greed, lust, and the depths one may be forced to prowl to ensure one's survival; punctually laced with potent psychedelia. Also one of the best mood-pieces I have ever seen, managing to put many a well-regarded film noir to shame in that respect.
The soggy marshland of the soul-- we're trudging there as we speak.
This is a master class in lighting. It's also an amazing film. It's raw and carnal and horrifying.
