Quite amazing. Rivette makes no concessions to narrative cliches and lets the characters (actors) run the game There are dream-like tangling incomplete storylines, paranoia mixed with dilated moments of banality, adventures and discussions that lead nowhere. But dreamy stylistics are completely avoided in favor of a documentary approach (though there's great attention to color and framing).
When 4 and a half hours just doesn't suffice. Spectre is a nifty little bit of metatextual play - ultimately too little too late. More paranoid, more obtuse, more magickal. Will mainly hold interest for those seeking variation from the big gun. Does it deliver? One complete fate rewrite, an audacity in editing together different conspiracies, those annoying freeze frames that then double on themselves. Hard to say.
It almost seems like overkill if you watch this version of Out 1 straight after the longer version but it's well worth it as there is a restructuring of certain scenes which give it a significantly different feel. Should always be watched after the longer Out 1 for new viewers. A supplementary work of art to one of the great works of art in film.
