Expertly crafted observational documentary on Russian Olympic gymnast Margarita Mamun and the brutal, crushing pressure to succeed. It's both stomach churning and fascinating to see the levels of torture, bullying, love and hate occurring at this level of competition. 4.5 stars
I am always pleased to see documentaries made in the vérité / direct cinema tradition. They would seem to have fallen more or less out of favour, as there is a predominating tendency to bombard audiences w/ information for the purposes of consolidating narratives. OVER THE LIMIT provides us a fascinating experience and gives us space to sit in it, to process. I thought new thoughts about athletics and microfascism.
