Trnka shares with Miyazaki a complicated relationship with modernity. The mature mind yearns for a return to a slowed-down closeness with nature, while the boyish spirit wants speed - Miyazaki in a plane, Trnka on a motorbike. Late Trnka is so easeful and assured in its visual inventiveness. While 'Ruka' is clearly a masterpiece, part of me likes enjoying Trnka's late formal brilliance w/o the politics as here. Fun!
