Stanley Kubrick United States, 1957

ig_____or's rating of the film Paths of Glory

Yet again, Kubrick did a war film I actually enjoyed watching, because it doesn't rely on the usual epic, long and overdramatic battle scenes so typical of this genre, but on the human side of the events instead. The ambitions, fears and values of these men, whose lives are totally defined by a simple military rank, are amazingly explored in terms of screenplay and cinematography. And what a beautiful final scene.
