1.4 stars. I would be so disappointed if aliens had the voice of Seth Rogan. I would not laugh. This was puerile without any of the joy of transgression that makes good puerile comedy funny. It had loads of male rape jokes, with it cheerily faux-ironically acknowledged that the heroine - who is disabled but not so disabled to make her unattractive to a male het teen audience - sexually assaults the male lead. Grotty.
Is this not the most perfect cast ever?? Anyways... it was a bumpy and cluttered road to go through, yeah, but the movie is overall laugh-out-loud funny and really pleasant. Time just flies by! Solid comedy. However, I prefer it when Pegg and Frost handle the whole thing themselves.
I don't like the portmanteau "geekgasm" (geek + orgasm). It doesn't sound as smooth as "nerdgasm", which I've heard several times on different forums. But there really is only one word that can describe this movie, and it's a made-up word: "geekgasm". "Paul" only appeals to a very small demographic target; thank Yoda (ehm, God) I'm on it!
Doesn't deserve its maligned reputation as the film is actually quite enjoyable just not up to the expectations that "Shaun" and "Fuzz" created. Mottola does an adequate job between send-up and buddy comedy guiding good comic performances from Pegg/Frost, Wigg and Bateman. Some fun dialogue, some laugh out loud moments and a well cast Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul.
I like aliens and I liked the supporting cast in this a whole bunch, but the script lacked something that didn't make it seem like 'just' a send-up to the sci-fi genre. Also, really bored with superfluous romantic side plots - EITHER MAKE THE GIRL A REAL CHARACTER OR DON'T BOTHER KISSING HER AT THE END. Who seriously needs to see another guy get another girl in another film where that isn't even the plot.
