Directed by Fridrikh Ermler
Soviet Union, 1935

Energetic propaganda piece about the class conflict on a collective farm during the years of the purges of “kulaks.” The film is perhaps most famous for its animated dream sequence featuring Comrade Stalin.

What are people saying?

  • José Neves's rating of the film Peasants

35mm. From the same year of Kozintsev and Trauberg's "The Youth of Maxim" and as this a beautiful example of socialist realism. Although the ideological load follows a mandatory program, the film finds its expressive ways of overcoming it and establishing a plasticity far beyond that path, as Christian capitalism did in other parts of the world (John Ford, for example). Guaranteed lyricism.
