In truth, discussion of Pieces might be more appropriately placed in this magazine’s ‘Endings…’ feature, for the Spanish director’s no-redeeming social-value slasher concludes with the genre’s most startling instance of climactic genital trauma outside the very different Sleepaway Camp kicker… In an age that admires the calculated straight camp of Asylum Studios, this bounty of authentic fumbling naivety is to be greatly prized.

It’s easy to see why so many look at PIECES and see little more than a mess of directorial incompetence, starlet bosoms, and unintentional comedy… But this uncomfortable DEEP RED meets SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER insanity carries about it a loudmouthed and gloriously unsubtle fascination with the ways discordant pieces can build together into a masterfully, beautifully incoherent whole: pieces of flesh making up a body, pieces of stories making up a narrative, pieces of film making up a space.

The preamble rhymes the pieces of a salacious jigsaw with those of a mutilated scolding mother, and adduces a promising whiff of Ensayo de un Crimen… The scariest thing is the ’80s Casio score, though the dubbing of the white-sweater coed (“The most beautiful thing in the world is smoking pot and fucking on a waterbed at the same time”) is art of some sort.
