Ratings & Reviews

  1. Wee Hunk's rating of the film Police, Adjective

This is the stuff the crime shows skip over: research, waiting, tailing someone, in-depth discussion of the meaning of words. I like the fact that the boss was willing to discuss the case in a civilized manner, instead of just ordering people around.

Like "Jeanne Dielmann" but with a tailing cop reading the dictionary instead of Delphine Seyrig peeling potatoes for hours. Very, very slow and very long..... Comme "Jeanne Dielmann" mais avec un flic en filature qui lit le dico à la place de Delphine Seyrig qui épluche des patates pendant des heures. Très, très lent et très long...

  5. fearraigh's rating of the film Police, Adjective

The best of Poromboiu's films to date. The two scenes with Vlad Ivanov's overbearing police chief are worth the price of entry alone.

  7. Miggy Angel's rating of the film Police, Adjective

"Lads, you know what we're doing here? Dialectics, that's what it's called. Do you know what that means?" - Formally courageous, belligerently ponderous, defiantly cerebral. A crawling meditation on the insidious function of language and semantics within the law, as they intersect the rights, freedoms and morals of the citizen and the upholding of the oppressive state. Seriously, this fella is a fkn genius

  8. Olivier Serafinowicz's rating of the film Police, Adjective

2.5. le film se construit lentement, souvent en "temps réel" (cf. le repas pendant la chanson), mais se construit bien autour d'une affaire dont l'importance reste indéterminée jusqu'au bout, l'extrème fin étant très amusante. J'ai aimé la montée en puissance de la question du langage, avec sa lecture sur la base nominaliste d'un dictionnaire par le Chef fasciste. Christi aurait du faire appel à un dico de philo.

  9. tanguys's rating of the film Police, Adjective

    Excellent definition of fascisme.

  10. Marc Saffar's rating of the film Police, Adjective

J'ai aimé ce film purement "cinéma roumain contemporain", lent à l'extrême, néo-réaliste à l'extrême et pourtant il m'a captivé. Il est ponctué de scènes de dialogues intenses particulièrement savoureuses et profondes.

  11. garrigues's rating of the film Police, Adjective

long, peu crédible, un flic qui désobéirait? images verdâtres

  12. Caillouquiroule's rating of the film Police, Adjective

Le film est long, lent, assez ennuyeux, bressonnien, bref pas ma came. Et puis voilà, la fin est sublime et justifie tout ce qui la précède. C'est rare ce genre de procédés, mais quand ça marche c'est phénoménal (la dernière fois que j'ai ressenti ça c'était devant l'incroyable "38 témoins" de Lucas Belvaux). 2ème Porumboiu que j'aime après "12h08 à l'Est de Bucarest". Ce cinéma roumain est vraiment excellent.

  13. Michael Zyx MH Claes's rating of the film Police, Adjective

French Connection in Bucharest: un bureau de police se focalise durant des semaines sur 1 collégien coupable d'avoir offert 1 joint. Brillant exercice de style, acteurs & réalisation excellents. On en oublie que le sujet est dérisoire. A police office is focusing for weeks on a schoolboy guilty of having offered a joint. Brilliant exercise in style, excellent actors & filming. We forget how the subject is ridiculous.

  14. Andrew Miller's rating of the film Police, Adjective

A film about the breakdown of dialectic-- language, conversation, meaning unravel in slow motion.

  15. Kyle Knapp's rating of the film Police, Adjective

Too inert to hit home for me (though I suppose that was the point). Bucur, broodingly charismatic, and Ivanov, who, as he did in "4 Months...", steals his scene with his vaguely threatening, unflinching intensity, are great. But the whole felt like less than the sum of its parts, and lacked the sharpness and ingenuity of Poromboiu's masterful debut, "12:08 East of Bucharest."

  16. Dogville59's rating of the film Police, Adjective

Chilling how persuasive the boss was yet still he is missing something his employee gets. There isn't much action but I enjoyed the movie, even, the waiting parts, because they were so real. The lady with the frisky dog, the secretary typing etc so real it made it fascinating. A movie about symbols, semantics, dialectics, individual morality vs the law and the price of choosing one over the other should they collide.

  17. saitosouta's rating of the film Police, Adjective

I'm drastically shocked by this movie. Extreme minimalism, thoroughly fixed long-take, miraculous mixture of sheer reality and critical fable. Seeing this, I'm convinced that Corneliu Porumboiu is one of the best director and Romanian New Wave is the most exciting forefront genre of film.

  18. pmbassist's rating of the film Police, Adjective

A bit of an undertaking to watch as the pace is frustratingly (though purposefully) slow. Absolutely worth watching just for the last 20 or so minutes

  19. between7skies's rating of the film Police, Adjective

Loved the pace, the character rendition of Cristi., and his moral dilemma, the backdrop of his own life. I appreciated that the film pulled it through without using music or sound score. This film is not for viewers hooked on Hollywood as reference to good cinema. It is more in the tradition of Hungarian or Russian cinema.

  20. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film Police, Adjective

Mmm sobrevalorado. Porumboui pasa de la perorata al discurso sobreentendido. Una historia que se inclina a la crítica histórica como ridiculizándolo. Lo que molesta son tal vez esas señas evidentes como canciones (que son a las leyes que son tan relativas) o normas linguísticas que juegan a la metáfora obvia. El cierre (lo más molesto) con ese diccionario es casi como la pastilla de moral en un drama político-social.

  21. giorgi's rating of the film Police, Adjective

  22. msmichel's rating of the film Police, Adjective

Though not quite up to the level set by "12:08 East of Bucharest" this is a clever examination of procedure, routine, morality and in the end lanquage. The pacing is quite deliberate and numbing after awhile but also quite mesmerizing. Performances are adequate save Vlad Ivanov who appears as the police captain in the final reel proving his performance in '4 Months..." was no one-off. A simple premise but clever.

  23. Tonda's rating of the film Police, Adjective

About as entertaining as reading a Dictionary for 2 hours.

The policeman has no clothes. Where is the adjective in that sentence?
