Villeneuve manages to tackle the subject matter in a respectful and solemn way. The violence is jarring, but not voyeuristic, and the characters feel real, thanks in large part to the acting performances. A powerful movie that focuses on individuals, but still manages to look at the bigger picture.

  3. Viginti_tres's rating of the film Polytechnique

School shooting as nature documentary. Look on as the worthless runt tries to make a mark on the herd. Technically stunning, it shocks and sickens as it should, but I couldn't help but find myself put-off by the approach to the material. It's not that it focuses too much on the violence, it's that there is nothing else to focus on; except maybe a male survivor scarred by the slaughter of feminists.

  4. Jarek Tokarski's rating of the film Polytechnique

Very strong story with lots of respect for victims. Villeneuve does not dazzle violence and suffering, don't need to shock the audience. Non-linear narrative makes this picture something really staying in your mind.

  5. Fabiha's rating of the film Polytechnique

"If I have a boy, I'll teach him how to love. And if I have a girl, I'll tell her the world is hers."

  6. Igor Ramos's rating of the film Polytechnique

Not sure about the fifth star, but this definitely ranks as one of Villeneuve's stronger works. It's gripping and frightening from start to finish. The scene near the end when the blood of the killer and the victim merge together is so hauntingly beautiful.

  8. Daniel S.'s rating of the film Polytechnique

Nine Canadian Genie awards. Highly recommended.

  9. Duncan Gray's rating of the film Polytechnique

Brilliantly staged and photographed, but it's hard to shake the feeling that Villeneuve's characters become little more than lambs for the slaughter.

  10. Kerem Soyyılmaz's rating of the film Polytechnique

Best thing is the way Denis tells the story and the cinematography. Camera usage and selection of b&w is really really good.

  14. Hugo C.'s rating of the film Polytechnique

  15. FISCHER's rating of the film Polytechnique

  16. Daunay's rating of the film Polytechnique

Y'a mieux à voir! Aller Rester Vertical

  17. RoRoRoro's rating of the film Polytechnique

  18. vuillermoz jacky's rating of the film Polytechnique

  19. Théo's rating of the film Polytechnique

Évidemment on pense à Elephant.

  20. SARAH LAJUS's rating of the film Polytechnique

  21. Ludovic72's rating of the film Polytechnique

  22. bryanvmh's rating of the film Polytechnique

It's a little unfortunate that a good portion of the movie is focused on the dichotomy between the murderer and a "good" man trying to help, but the cinematography is interesting/reminiscent of Cleo From 5 to 7 (school as new site for educated Flaneuse, etc)

  23. Ana Sousa's rating of the film Polytechnique

  24. Tigrão's rating of the film Polytechnique

The first film from Villeneuve that I thought was a miss. It has everything: an interesting and harrowing subject, beautiful cinematography and great directing, but it just all falls short. He installs a certain distance between character and viewer, between event and aftermath, that I didn't connect to. Maybe it was the point: how to connect to horror?
