Everything-but-kitchen-sink Japanese supernatural horror film based on an Akutagawa story - split screens, superimpositions, color filters, distorted voices moaning out from the fiery depths of Buddhist Hades, you name it. The ruler frolics and says "let them eat cake" while mass starvation goes on outside the castle walls. The artist believes, as Akutagawa did, that Hell's got nothing on this mortal coil.
