Moody and unsettling. Solid cinematography, sound and music. This film is about love, mental illness and how it can affect a family. The acting is very strong, watching the film I literally felt Cedric's loneliness, confusion, isolation and anger. It's a film about disturbed souls, destructive side of love and family interactions. This is not an easy film to watch, the topic is rather demanding, but it's worth it.
"Both of us are going to have to be very patient. With time, I hope I won't have to worry anymore. Maybe you will realize at what point, more than the others, you were the focus of special attention and overwhelming love. That day, who knows, maybe we'll both smile again."
I was so moved by this movie. At first I couldn't even look at the main character, Cedric, I thought he was so disturbing. The more I was watching, my view on him was changing. When family gathered at home, after the rain, I found Cedric as someone trapped in a cage. The mother and the rest of the family, even daughter-in-law and little cousin, were responsible for the suffering of Cedric. The mother was the monster.
A riveting, at-times disturbing film that may burn slowly but keeps you gripped, in no small part thanks to Frédéric Noirhomme's brilliant cinematography. Thomas Blanchard and the ever dependable Nathalie Baye are simply superb. The twist at the very end of the film is so sublimely understated, yet so shocking, it totally undermines the comfortable prejudice that the film lures you into. Highly recommended!
I don't understand why they all smoke cigarettes. Is It a coping mechanism? Or do most people in Belgium smoke cigarettes? I live in California, and hardly anyone I know smokes. My favorite part of this film was the yodeling. This film really isn't about smoking cigarettes or yodeling but those things stood out for me, I guess because they are so different from my world. The mental illness is not; I see that often.
Ein äußerst präziser, fein komponierter Film mit komplexen Figuren und perfekt austarierten Kameraeinstellungen. Wer trägt Schuld? Wer verhält sich 'normal'? Es bleibt unklar. Gut so. Ein herausragender Film! / An extremely precisely, finely composed film with complex figures and perfectly counterbalanced shots. Who carries guilt? Who behaves 'normally'? All this remains unclear. Well thus. A miraculous film!
Strike.
The film is distant and difficult to follow. Waiting as long as possible to explain the family dynamics at play, leaving the viewer to guess for the relationships. Lacking this context makes some of the big moments carry the same weight they would carry otherwise. The film is very smartly done, once into the flow of the language, it comes alive. But the reactions earned feel more muted than what they could have been.
