Baker’s shooting places you alongside the characters while his cross-cutting forces examination of how seemingly disparate experiences are shaped by the same system, generating insight through observation and epiphany through experience.
Baker’s intelligence with the camera has evolved to an Albert Maysles level of patience and sensitivity, attuned to the gestures of the people he films, again as humans before characters, life before cinema.
It's marginal characters and crude language may put you off at first, but these characters are fighting for their lives with nails, teeth and fists and it's that hunger for life that makes this film so compelling to watch. The primal emotions this film portrays so effortlessly is sometimes all that matters when it comes to making a movie.
