A creature named Kyubey offers to grant Madoka a wish if she becomes a ‘magical girl’ and fights grotesque witches. A magical girl named Homura tries to stop this agreement, and the true nature of the contract with Kyubey is revealed.

Having read most of 'Saya no Uta' until it became too distressing I should probably have expected that Madoka would be a candy-coated bitter pill, but what makes it interesting is that the candy coating is so winfully appealing that the aesthetics alone offer a philosophical challenge to Urobuchi's nihilism.
