Gokudô kuroshakai

Takashi Miike Japan, 1997

Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Rainy Dog

The first film in Miike's Black Society Trilogy, Shinjuku Triad Society, has Miike's traditional over-the-top elements (violence/dark humor) that peppers up (yet non-purposely) a 'mostly' typical narrative. Ironically, Rainy Dog doesn't know to take itself seriously or not and is too lethargic when it's in normal mode to be entertaining. Only its shift of viewpoint to the hitman victims' family member feels unique.
