This planned "Conan" movie turned to a stand-alone instead. It has a great beginning with Janet Agreen who would have been excellent as Red Sonja as Birgitte Nielsen is not believable and this is most apparent when she is standing still with the sword in her hand as she looks like a long legged tree with balloons. Extremely annoying child actor and terrible effects add to the pain. It isn't even "so bad it is funny".
Instead of rebooting good movies that don't need it, somebody should reboot this glacial mess. Fleischer's direction is as loose here as it is in Conan the Destroyer. Eons pass where nothing happens, but at least there's a Morricone soundtrack playing over the nothingness. Props for having a female hero who actually looks powerful.
Clearly an attempt to continue cashing in on the 'Conan the Barbarian' franchise, but this one is actually a lot more fun than the bloated and pretentious 'Conan'. It's as cheesy as you'd expect an 80s sword-and-sandal epic to be, but veteran director Richard Fleischer keeps the action clipping along, and the cast is likable. Not a great film by any means, but solid camp entertainment.
