Our take

A film of rocky waters and heady passions, Jean Grémillon’s romantic classic is French cinema at its finest. Aided by Jacques Prévert’s poetic script, Jean Gabin’s bruised masculinity and Michèle Morgan’s melancholic fragility evoke the tragedy of love found at the wrong place and the wrong time.
