Retrospectroscope

Directed by Kerry Laitala
United States, 1997
Avant-Garde, Short

Synopsis

The “Retrospectroscope” apparatus has gone through many incarnations; its presence belies the processes that have created it. As a paracinematic device, it traces an evolutionary trajectory, encircling the viewer in a procession of flickering fantasies of fragmented lyricism.

  • francisca bacon's rating of the film Retrospectroscope

Judging by the still, it seemed a sped-up retrospective of "Werckmeister Harmonies" (You know, http://dl9fvu4r30qs1.cloudfront.net/61/9e/db714063478498453703d275a8b4/the-werckmeister-harmonies.jpg). It's not. Precinema was closer to the jerkiness of Ombres chinoises (would a today remake of Robison's 1923 "Warning Shadows" erase the reference to galanty show completely?) than to the lifelike fluidness we know it for.
