The excess of symbology and significant results in the cancellation of what is to reveal and only demonstrates an imposition of meaning. And its demonstration. Furthermore, the bad taste is dominant. The opposite of the cine-biographical metaphors by Paradjanov and Mani Kaul or the staged realism of Richard Dindo.
FNC '12 One of the year's best. Ghobadi makes a career best with this visually arresting work that marks his first film shot outside Iran. Unlike the intimate "Persian Cats" this film embraces the visual art and is an exceptionally well shot and edited work. Script is somewhat engimatic leaving much to digest. Performances are top notch especially the nearly silent Behrouz Vossoughi and a well cast Bellucci.
Ghobadi has crafted a film that is poetic and perfectly in tune with the turmoil of a man betrayed and wrongfully imprisoned for 30 years. Evocatively shot with restrained performances and impressive sound design, Rhino Season demonstrates the heartbreak of a broken life and the stripping of free will. Metaphors like the giant tree are both visually impressive and powerfully clear. 4 stars
