Peak performance Ford. Those looking for a demonstration of the master's nuanced approach to the messy moral ambiguity of the American experiment would best look elsewhere. This is pretty unapologetic ra ra stuff. But as far as the perfection of a particular formal vision goes, I absolutely cannot think of a better Ford. It helps that the elements are spare. I would take this vision over any number of Eisensteins.
Only distinguished thing this really has going for it is the gorgeous black and white cinematography. Other than that, it's just an ambiguously racist Korean War era propaganda film disguised as a Western. Totally superficial and forgettable in the face of the mythic stories Ford has told with his other films, but still nice to look at. Wayne’s mustache is substandard and insubstantial, like the plot of the film.
Finale iper-patriottico,in puro USA style.
