The first is a rock ‘n’ roll picaresque starring Meatloaf as a Mr. Fix It, get-in-the-van prodigy, and featuring a charming Debbie Harry (as herself) bit, but shows Rudolph hapless with cracker-barrel comedy.

What was most disconcerting about Roadie at the time of its release was less the wavering humor than the seeming atrophy of Rudolph’s precise, supple style. The fast cutting that, for the most part, replaces the studied tracking shots and elegant visual plans of the earlier films runs a little to the ragged side, and the thoughtful conceptual organization that always characterizes his independent, self-generated projects is nowhere to be found.
