Good adaptation. Better than the 30s attempt. This is the Robert Newton show, who generally hams it up and chews up the scenery with gusto. By doing this however, it seems like it made the rest of the cast overact to compensate which is a shame. Overall a solid 50s Disney flick. 3.5 stars
Disney's 1st live-action film is a step in the right direction even w/ it's flaws. There's plenty of standout moments, from the gunfights, the taking of the ship, & especially Jim in the barrel. But the film's biggest asset is Mr. Robert Newton. Devouring the scenery like a bottle of vintage rum, Newton's Silver is the definitive performance of the character. It may be imperfect, but this is a solid Disney adventure.
