Extremely compelling in concept alone, it is anchored by two incredibly strong performances. Certainly a lot to think about, and though I appreciate it’s hesitancy to unpack the content it also makes for more of an experience of a film rather than something artistic and rewatchable.
The first half is horribly claustrophobic and oppressive as Ma tries to turn her living hell into something positive for her son. The psychological torment continues after they break out and this is just as much a film about post traumatic stress as it is about the simple and unshakeable bond between parent and child. This wouldn't work of the actors weren't excellent - Brie Larson's Oscar is fully deserved.
