Gazzara walking aloof around Singapore in light flower shirts, smoking cigars and exercising his "yellow fever". With a plot taking a certain direction just to nonchalantly forgo it for something more interesting along the way, "Saint Jack" is a mature example of good spirited New Hollywood.
I love that after years of watching movies I can still discover gems like this. Ben Gazzara plays a similar role to the role in "Killing of a Chinese Bookie", he does this well. Great post-colonial atmosphere with the Vietnam war in the background. I think this film deserves more attention.
CINEMA _ Ben Gazzara is in every shot of this film, always on screen, and just shining with another Cassavetes type performance. He plays Jack Flowers, a kind of successful failure, the guy you need to know to spend a good night in brothel-Singapore (the all place is just humid and filthy but the film makes you feel at home - oh by the way Hugh Hefner is executive producer here). Delightful surprise.
