Honest, likeable & unpretentious. There is enough humour & warmth to the story to make it stand safe from the claws of boredom & silliness. McGregor & Blunt are convincing in their lead roles & Scott-Thomas brings a touch of romcom madness to the show. The Arab terrorist subplot is rather dispensable but, as it often happens with weaker scripts, something extra had to be added to a story that goes as far as it goes.
Lasse Hallstrom's sweet love story and comedy is a sort of Local Hero meets a toned down version of In the Loop. Here in the dry valleys of the Yemen - Ministers, salmon, soldiers and a small tincture of sentimentality collide in a great flood. Great Scottish murmurs bubble up from Ewan McGregor and are threaded into the delicate broderie anglaise of Emily Blunt. A film to make a wish on and then smile.
TIFF '11. Better than i expected. Light comedy from Hallstrom with winning performances by Macgregor, Blunt and Waked. However the picture belongs to Kristen Scott Thomas in a viscious and funny performance as a brit politico trying to manage "good news from the middle east". Fun, but hard to imagine it having much impact.
