My 2 favorites Joko Anwar films are Forbidden Door and Kala, and after waiting for almost a decade, he finally got back to making a film that is similar (both in theme and style) with those 2 masterpieces.
Build up after build up with unsatisfactory end in each scene. I just felt nothing but annoyed of the noisy crowd.
Edit: on a second thought, at least this film was made in a spirit of making good film (I believe so), but I just wished that this (IMO) actually talented film makers realize that sometimes, being simple is the best and the hardest thing. Complicated doesn't always equal great.
And one more, the Bapak, is too hawt too be true, matek akoo!!
At first, i thought this would be scarier than its 80's version, but apparently the horror in this remake is on par with the original version. Trust me, this isn't super scary like Malaysia's Munafik.
but i REALLY love how dense the storyline is, compared to the 80's version. No plotholes at all, a quite successful remake, and i can't wait for the sequel!
Three things: 1) Tara Basro is just jaw-dropping in 80s fashion, 2) wondering if I was only imagining the, uh, strange tension between Bront Palarae/Endy Arfian and Tara Basro, 3) I'm actually okay with the laughing and screaming audience, it's part of the horror experience. Overall it's a steadily entertaining film unlike Joko Anwar's previous fluke.
I have mixed feelings about it. On personal aspect, the house is truly resembling my grandparents house in Bandung's remote rural area. I know how it feels to be in this kind of place, so Joko Anwar's Satan's Slaves gives me major creep by reviving those memories. The story itself is over-complicated, and I can't believe how a family could be all jokey and calm after being attacked by zombies and brutal poltergeist.
