This is an interesting film from Oliver Stone, it's pretty great throughout but then the ending kills it. I expect Oliver Stone to have more balls then to go for the cop out ending but everything else leading up to it is pretty great. I probably should see the extended cut.
Sure it's no masterpiece but it's fun all around, the plot is easy, the setting is nice, everybody looks great... the sex scenes are actually sexy!
The only thing that kept me from giving it 4 stars was the ending, which was ridiculous.
Competent, but underwhelming effort from Oliver Stone. It has its moments, the cast is good - particularly Del Toro, Hayek, and Travolta - and it ends strong (before a pretty bad cop-out). But as a whole it lacks momentum and is surprisingly tame, lacking the grittiness and edge it seems to promise. Unfortunately not the comeback film Stone fans have been hoping for, but slightly better than most of his work of late.
Despite how bad it is, it has a lot of potential for me. I was fascinated with Stone's darker themes and characters. It was poetic. But my friend commented that it was "basically Twilight." Noted also is Blake Lively's performance.
