I still scratching my head on this one, and the peace between the « three great nations » remains ongoing, because of our misunderstanding of each other.
I've seen this film twice, once before I read Franz Kafka's story and once after. The first time I saw it as a mediocre take on a parable and remained fascinated only by Straub's techniques (best use of sound in film today). However after I read Kafta's short story I realised it is actually a beautiful cinematic evaluation of it. But I'm not sure having to read a book to fully appreciate a film is a good thing.
