A beautifully shot film that focuses on the hypocrisies of organized religion, as a convent of repressed nuns hold on to their secrets and desires while projecting their internal struggles through perverse and brutal witch hunts. This pushes the envelope the way exploitation is known for, but with an especially artistic grace.
There are some significant problems with the pacing in the first half but stick with it-the final act ties the whole thing together in a way that's as lurid, uncompromising and visually intoxicating as these culturally unsupervised grindhouse films get.
An incredible achievement of 70s pop art and searing anti-religious sentiment. Genuinely shocking, erotic and artistic. I never knew torture porn could be so beautiful before I saw a nun elegantly strung up and brutally whipped with bunches of thorny roses! Norifumi Suzuki is the most underrated auteur of all time.
