Brilliant. In a sense it might almost be conceptual art, but what that really comes down to is that we are dealing w/ self-reflexive dalliance in (and implicit interrogation of) genre cinema. And make absolutely no mistake about it: Kunuk has made a Western. But John Ford is a misleading forebearer. This is stripped down and raw. Not Ford-romantic at all. Think Budd Boetticher. Think the "existential" Monte Hellman.
While beautiful to look at Kunuk's latest creation, much like 'The Journals of Knud Rasmussen' before it, suffers in comparison to his brilliant first film 'The Fast Runner' back in 2001. Inspired by Ford's 'The Searchers' this film though is missing context and a satisfying reunion or much of an ending at all. Kudos for what must have been a difficult shoot but scripting needed the same persistence and grit.
