Pretty close to the original novella by Stephen King about a writer who gets stalked by a man who claims that he stole his story. it goes over classic ground from the writer, but I liked how the film built itself up and the film has a different ending that is actually better than the one originally written. Johnny Depp is solid without the usual quirkiness too.
“This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife.” Unjustly overlooked, here's a suave Hitchcockian thriller that is only nominally interested in the Big Twist (crackable 10mins in). Instead, the focus is on atmosphere and author Mort Rainey who is morbidly stricken by his wife's infidelity and a bad case of writer's block. Deliciously dry-witted, its got Johnny Depp in top form eating Doritos and corn.
So many people dislike this film, but I actually liked Depp and Turturro quite a bit. Before I ever wrote anything of my own, I never liked this movie, but now I can appreciate the concept of plagiarism, psychosis and the mess these characters get into. The title sequence shot was great and when he starts to realize his psychosis, the cinematography goes up a notch. All in all, it's not as bad as everyone says.
Few of King's stories translate to film with good results. Secret Window is an exception, thanks to Depp's spot-on performance as Mort Rainey. King injects at lot of humor into his horror, and Depp manages to pull it off nicely. Fun to watch, and the ending to the story remains intact, thank you. Good supporting cast.
