3.8 - there's a few inconsistencies & breaks with standard BDSM-protocol (ssc, u know), but that hardly overcomes a witty, intimate & beautiful romance that manges something rare: Showing BDSM not as a sinful pit nor human desire unbound, but as the way some people live, love & desire
This movie is a lot more quiet than I remembered it being, all told in a whisper. And what a sign of its times! An intelligently balanced between comedy, drama and romance movie, especially considering its theme. A well directed, funny, sexy, tragic and controversial film that manages to be very light and enjoyable. Not like that abomination of a movie, "50 shades of Grey".
This one really bored me to death, after a very big breath and a lot of time to spare, I gave it a second chance a few weeks later. It's a bit funny, a bit mellow, a bit romantic, but 2 hours - whyyy. Maggie Gyllenhaal grew on me and I actually ended up not hating her character by the end of it, but other than that, lacks some edge, kinkiness, a little more somethin' somethin' to save it from its dullness.
