My first Milligan, and I didn’t expect it to be so affecting. The stark photography, abysmal sound quality, the swirling camera, the screeching leads; it feels less like a film labored over and more like something a crazed mind retched directly onto celluloid. The dialogue is sometimes beautifully, almost poetically profane. Milligan was an objectively bad filmmaker, but there’s something vital in this sick vision.
I'm 100% sure Vinterberg's Festen is an unofficial re-boot of Seeds Of Sin. The main character wants to find closure in her incest ridden family and invites everyone to a home party that falls apart in a matter of days when the truth reaches the surface. Besides plot there's also the sexually aggressive couple, the intimate close-up sequences, a garden/trees scene in the second half, the maids of the house involved..
* 1/2. A curiosity. The movie consists of half a dozen softcore porno scenes involving the characters of the movie and half a dozen murders (of the same characters but naturally AFTER they have completed their immoral and highly reprehensible sexual duties. Are you still following me?). The photography in b&w may give you the impression that it's an arty film or insert in your mind the nostalgia of your teen years.
