Maddin's films reveal my ignorance of film history. This film reminds me of Lang, Lynch, Nikolaidis, and nothing else. I feel incapable of appreciating what I'm assured are his films' many references to the cinematic past. In lieu of this understanding, I venture now a few words. This film depicts a BDSM phantasy: the saviour transforms into the captor, the masochist captive moves from grimaces to moans, sparks fly.
