When reading the plot one would thinkthat the story would end up becoming a good film. Unfortunately, it ended up becoming one huge mess. Starting with the laughable script that never allows its characters to be more than lousy caricatures, and finishing with the terrible direction. Bier never brings life or elevates the story, ending up in 2 wasted hours of the viewer's life. And then there's the god-awful acting
Misconceived on a near tragic level. Bier's secondary attempt in American filmmaking aims for a grandiose take on the level of 'Babitt', 'Greed' or perhaps 'McCabe and Mrs Miller' but fails to achieve anything remotely interesting. outside strong production values and an interesting turn by young Lawrence. One wonders what wound up on the cutting room floor as this film seems shorn down from something much longer
Both Lawrence and Cooper made their characters more likable than the screenplay allows, so instead of having depth and layers they come out as confusing and with questionable motivations. Sadly, the whole film missed its genre - it's treated as a vintage melodrama, despite the story being a thriller.
