So many extraordinary stylistic elements here, everything visual is sheer perfection: the lighting, the photography, the framing of the shots, as well as everything that went into the shot - the set designs, costuming, etc - it seems that everyone who worked on this film made sure that every detail was meticulous. And film-within-a-film; we see the characters watching and making films. I love that.
A remarkable, sumptuous piece of work so stocked with wit every double- becomes a triple-entendre upon adequate reflection. This layering device - operating on so many profound levels of interpretation, with humor and sadness in equal doses - leads to one of the best film endings ever put to screen: We worship at the altar of cinema. Some do in faith, and others, in penance.
