Another excellent pairing of Davies and Vidor, who made some of the last great films of the silent era. This is a great film showcasing how films were made during this era also, and has a veritable who's who of silent film star cameos including greats like Gilbert and Fairbanks. The story of success going to a newcomers head is all too real, and sadly seems to happen to many of our stars. Just a great film. 4.5 stars
I prefer Vidor's more serious works, but this is a fairly charming film about filmmaking. It's interesting how Peggy's illusions and conceptions about dramas make her boring, conventional, and uptight, whereas Billy has more of a grounded effect on her. Chaplin's cameo is one of the great ones in cinema, so funny.
